Dear Shirley,

Happy Birthday! Today you are officially ten-year-old.

Don’t be nervous, this is a letter from yourself in the future. Relax, this is not a prank, why don’t you try to read it first?

You must be wondering what you will become in ten years, right? But I won’t tell you. The future is interesting because of the unknown. I hope you will explore it by yourself. The only thing I have to tell you is that you have always been great for these years!

I am here for helping to prepare your younger self for the realities of life online.Ten years later, social media has become very important. The connection between people, organization, and between countries challenge the traditional hierarchical structure to a large extent. For you now, social media is just a chat tool. You will not use it to do any other things. But now, you can get more information from it, and even social media has spawned more career choices.

See, Mac cosmetics is doing a survey for Black Friday Discount through social media!

Black Friday has just passed, and I still remember that you are all walking to the eaton centre to find discounts. But now, big data will analyze the keywords you have searched and determine what you need. You only need to open the social media apps, and the advertisements of various brands will appear in it quietly. Then you can also find the one you like smoothly. You should have just learned to use Instagram, right? See, you can even be easily notified here that your favourite cookie store has a new product, as long as you follow their account. It is no longer just a social media that allows you to share pictures and share your life.

Have you ever thought that social media can even be used for classes? Why not? With video and audio, what else do we need? This is enough for us to interact! In 2020, you will meet a new social media called ZOOM, which allows us to take classes remotely at home. Of course, having one more method does not mean that you don’t have to go to school. Face-to-face teaching always has an advantage that cannot be replaced.

As I mentioned earlier, social media now brings many derivative careers, such as Tiktok, a new type of short video social media. Here, people have more opportunities to show themselves, accumulate fans and make money for themselves. When more people come to view their accounts, businesses will also take this opportunity to let them advertise their products. There is also VSCO, a social media for sharing their photographs. In the past, some people could not let others appreciate their own works in their entire lives, but now it is different. Through these platforms, you can find the works of people all over the world. They have more opportunities to be discovered and thus become a recognized artist.

But what I need you to pay attention to is that while adapting to these changes, please protect your own privacy. It’s easy to post your opinions on social media-everyone does. If everyone is hiding behind a virtual nickname, it will be easier to do. With or without it, social media has become a place for social justice. A person can be judged by other social media users because of their improper behavior. Sometimes this kind of social media activity may be good and it will have positive results, and sometimes people who have done nothing wrong may become victims. It is also often accompanied by bullying. Considering that it is much easier to obtain someone’s personal items (such as photos or private information), it is also very easy to use these things to attack people. In short, social media is sometimes a powerful opportunity, but sometimes a powerful weapon, and it always depends on how we use it. Social media can damage someone’s personal or professional life, reputation and even health.

There are two sides to everything, and I hope you are more expecting than fearing the future. As long as you use all of this reasonably, I believe you can live a better life! At the same time, please be careful not to indulge in social media, and do not forget to use more things to accompany the people around you. Cherishing the talents around you is the first thing to do well.
